Do you have blocked sinuses from a sinus infection, chronic congestion, allergies or a cold? Have you considered homeopathy?

Acute sinus issues usually respond quickly to well-chosen homeopathic remedies.

Chronic sinus issues can be more complex to address. A homeopath must consider etiology, exposures like mold and other allergens (including diet), the immune system including the gut, the emotional state, etc. It's also important to consider structural issues of the nose and airway and other bodily tensions that may be contributing to the problem - other modalities like dentistry, myofunctional therapy and osteopathy may help.

I will briefly discuss two homeopathic remedies that I have successfully used in my practice recently: Hydrastis canadensis (Hydr) and Kali bichromicum (Kali-bi). (Disclaimer: every case must be assessed individually. These remedies may not be indicated for your type of blocked nose.)

Hydrastis canadensis

Fullness of sinuses - thick ropy nasal discharges

I used this remedy recently for someone with a lingering tickly cough after a cold who also had this particular symptom: thick nasal discharge after a cold.

Hydr was the only remedy in this symptom rubric. It helped me individualize the case and find this remedy.

The discharge was yellow, thick and continuously filled up the sinuses and the post-nasal area. When blowing the nose it felt like 'large amounts were coming from deep within the sinuses'.

Hydr 6c twice daily helped clear it.

Hydrastis is made from the plant Goldenseal, a very popular antimicrobial herb. Homeopathic hydrastis is often used for post-nasal drip and other respiratory issues (see Boiron product).

Kali bichromicum

Pain in face during sinus infection

Kali-bi is another well-known remedy for thick, yellow and ropy nasal discharges during colds. It is better known than Hydrastis for helping alleviate pain in the sinuses and face (nose and cheeks) from fullness of mucus in the sinuses or sinus infections.

I prescribed this to someone with chronic sinus infections (with this particular symptom of very painful sinuses), alongside other remedies to balance the immune system and they have not had recurrence in months and feel more resilient since.

More indications for the use of Kali-bi from the UK School of Homeopathy.

Practical Tips for Managing Sinus Issues

There are many other remedies to help address sinus issues in homeopathy. If these and other 'over the counter' remedies aren't helping and you're feeling stuck in your healing journey, consider reaching out to a homeopath for in-depth case taking and assessment. In addition to homeopathic remedies, consider these practical steps to effectively manage sinus issues during fall:

  • Stay Hydrated: Consuming enough fluids helps thin mucus and encourages proper drainage.

  • Use a Humidifier: Adding moisture to the air can counteract dryness and ease sinus irritation.

  • Practice Nasal Irrigation: Rinsing your nasal passages with a saline solution can clear out mucus and allergens. I really love Xlear!

  • Avoid Allergens: Stay alert to allergens such as mold and pollen, and minimize your exposure.
