When Anxiety Begins to Shift: A Natrum Muriaticum Case

Recently, I had a follow-up with a lovely young woman who experienced a profound shift in her chronic anxiety after being prescribed Natrum muriaticum, the well-known homeopathic remedy made from table salt.

Who is the Person Experiencing the Anxiety?

Her anxiety had been a constant, low-level presence in her life. She described ongoing anxiety and stress, along with a history of panic attacks that she experienced particularly strongly in her throat, with a sensation as though she were suffocating and could not speak. She also had a history of sinus infections and skin issues.

But in homeopathy, we don't look at anxiety in isolation.

The emotional and physical symptoms are considered together, along with the individual person's way of experiencing and responding to life. In this case, an important part of the picture was what happened when she felt anxious or overwhelmed: she would shut down and isolate herself.

There was also a recurring pattern in her relationships. She formed strong attachments to one or two closest friends and was fearful of losing a friendship. At times, she felt resentment when she perceived that she was giving more than she was receiving. She was naturally reserved and tended to keep her emotions guarded rather than expressing them openly.

She described herself as someone who liked to feel solid and structured. There were also physical characteristics that contributed to the overall picture, including an aversion to fish.

This is only a small part of the full case, but taken together, these details helped form a distinctive homeopathic picture.

I prescribed one dose of Natrum muriaticum in a high potency.

The Follow-Up

Three weeks later, the change was striking. She estimated that her anxiety had improved by 65–70%.

But the changes weren't limited to the original symptom.

She described experiencing a great deal of crying and what she experienced as emotional release. An old lung pain also briefly returned. She noticed that it tended to improve after she cried, and over the following weeks it gradually disappeared.

This may be understood by homeopaths as a 'return of old symptoms'—when a previous symptom temporarily reappears during the course of a case. It is a taken as evidence that healing is underway.

Perhaps most importantly, she described feeling more like herself. She told me she was beginning to speak her opinion and allow herself to acknowledge her own feelings rather than automatically shutting them down. She could say, “Maybe I do care about this,” or “Maybe I do care about that,” instead of pushing those feelings away.

She felt calmer and more carefree. She was overthinking less and had made a conscious decision to stop worrying so much about other people's judgments.

Her mother noticed the change as well and shared:

The remedy you gave [...] has had a profound effect. She has really opened up to me which has been wonderful.

Understanding the Homeopathic Picture

From a homeopathic perspective, this case illustrates why we look beyond the name of a condition.

The picture was of someone who was deeply attached yet guarded; someone who could fear losing important relationships while simultaneously having difficulty expressing her vulnerable emotions within those relationships.

The throat sensation of suffocation where she couldn't speak was particularly noteworthy because it occurred alongside a broader pattern of holding back and difficulty expressing her emotions.

Other physical symptoms also contributed to the overall picture, including her history of sinus and skin complaints.

Natrum muriaticum is made from sodium chloride—ordinary table salt. Sodium and chloride naturally come together to form a strong bond. One way of understanding Natrum muriaticum, particularly through the Table of Elements approach, is through themes of one-to-one attachment and separation. This was particularly relevant in this case. She formed deep attachments in her close relationships and could become very invested in one person, while also carrying a strong fear of losing that connection. When she felt vulnerable or worried about a relationship, her response was often to close herself off and hold her emotions inside.

This analysis is not, by itself, a reason to prescribe Natrum muriaticum. Rather, it offers another way of understanding a theme that was already clearly present in the individual's larger picture. The remedy was chosen because the overall case corresponded to Natrum muriaticum, including her emotional patterns, relationships, physical symptoms and characteristic way of responding to life.

The Changes She Noticed in the First 3 Weeks

  • 65–70% improvement in chronic anxiety

  • Excessive nighttime thirst gradually improving (note that she weaned herself off coffee during this time)

  • Significant improvement in skin breakouts

  • Significant emotional release and crying

  • An old lung pain returned temporarily, then gradually disappeared

  • Felt “a lot more myself” and more able to speak her opinion

  • Became more comfortable acknowledging and expressing her emotions

  • Felt calmer and more carefree

  • Less overthinking

  • Less concern about other people's judgments

  • Her mother noticed that she had “really opened up”

This is one individual case, that is still developing, and it is not a guarantee of the same response in another person. In homeopathy, Natrum muriaticum is not considered an “anxiety remedy” simply because it helped this person with anxiety. It may be considered when the broader, individual picture corresponds to the remedy.

That is what makes homeopathic prescribing different from simply choosing a remedy for a symptom.

The goal is not to find a remedy for anxiety. It is to understand what is unique about this person's anxiety, and how it fits into the larger picture of who they are.
